(South Carolina, 1876-1973)
Joan of Arc, inscribed in base "Anna V Hyatt", incised "X 7" possibly a proof or number 7, foundry mark "Gorham Co. Founders O 502", bronze, 16 x 11 x 5 in.
Note: Born in Cambridge Mass, Huntington began studying art as a young woman, and worked with artists in Boston, New York and Europe. She showed an early aptitude for representing the anatomy of animals, perhaps inspired by her father who was a professor of Zoology and Paleontology. While in Paris she was inspired by the 19th century revival of interest in Joan of Arc. In 1909, the year of Joan of Arc's beatification, Anna Hyatt submitted a life size plaster statue to the Paris salon and earned honorable mention. Back in New York, funds were raised to erect a sculpture commemorating the 500th anniversary of the birth of the "Maid of Orleans" and Anna Hyatt's submission was chosen. With much fanfare and an elaborate celebration the sculpture was unveiled in Riverside Park in 1915.In 1923, at the age of 47 she married railroad heir and philanthropist Archer Milton Huntington. They met at a ball where she was dressed as Joan of Arc. They would go on to found almost 20 museums and wildlife preserves and she would become one of the most prolific and successful sculptors of the 20th century.Note: Born in Cambridge Mass, Huntington began studying art as a young woman, and worked with artists in Boston, New York and Europe.
