(New York/Pennsylvania, 1928-1987)
Tattooed Lady, signed within print on underwear, offset lithograph on thin green Plover onion skin paper with original folds, sheet 29 x 11 in.; unframed
Provenance: Acquired by Patricia McCullough Stevenson, New York, NY; By descent in family
Note: Andy Warhol used this print as his "résumé" to gain employment at advertising agencies throughout New York. Seeking work as a graphic artist he stopped by B. Altman where Patricia “Pat” McCullough Stevenson worked as a fashion illustrator from 1954 to 1961. She remembered when her boss, Lou Ritter, refused to give Andy Warhol a job, declaring, “What is this?” as he threw his résumé in the trash. Pat retrieved the print as she was impressed with the image of a woman covered with the logos of various companies covering her arms and legs like tattoos. Ritter also reportedly said, "Warhol would never make it at Altman.” We know how the story ends and are grateful to have this imaginative document.
