(late 18th/19th century)
apparently unsigned, oil on canvas, 27 x 21 in. oval; fully restored period carved gilt wood frame, 35 x 29-1/4 in.
Note: This intriguing unsigned portrait of Washington bears a striking similarity to a life portrait by miniaturist Walter Robertson (Irish/Pennsylvania, 1750-1801) in the collection of Tudor Place, Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Tudor Place is the ancestral home of Martha Washington's descendants. In this painting, as in many portraits General Washington posed for, he is portrayed in the 1789 uniform that can now be seen in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
Provenance: The Estate of Peter H. Tillou, Litchfield, Connecticut
lined onto probably original stretcher bars, areas of retouch scattered throughout; frame with wear, crakes, losses to gilt and decoration
