Pair of Portraits: Captain Christopher and Mrs. Rachel Henry Hoover, unsigned, each oil on canvas, 24-1/2 x 22-1/2 in.; matching modern wood and gilt wood frames, 30-1/4 x 28-1/4 in.

Notes: This is most likely Brigadier General Christopher Hoover (b. 1789, Lancaster County, PA; d. 1856, OH) who served in the First Brigade of the Ohio Militia in the War of 1812. He married Rachel Henry (1792-1862) in West Virginia in 1812. 

both lined with wax and linen, areas of retouch and evidence of old repair throughout--especially four inch line upper left (her), four inch line forehead and upper right (him), taped edge of stretcher visible under frame front, yellowed varnish, grime, frames with minor abrasions
