(19th century) Captain John Smith Captured by American Indians, unsigned, oil on canvas, 25 x 30 in.; gilt wood and composition frame,. Condition: lined with wax and linen, abrasions, crackle;. Notes: This work has nuances of the great American history painters, Charles Wimar, John Vandelyn and Benjamin West. While the artist remains unattributed, it is an intriguing depiction, not traditionally seen, of Captain John Smith being captured by native American Indians of Powhatan's tribe. Traditionally the depiction of his capture includes the rescue of Pocahontas, who does not appear in the image. Provenance: Collection of Robert Fastov
