Upholstered Open-Arm Chair said to be a chair from the U.S. Senate, circa 1830s, back with mahogany crest rail set with brass screws, poplar and pine secondary, velvet-upholstered back, arms and seat, shaped arm supports, turned front legs on casters, possibly original underupholstery for seat (visible through holes in bottom board at underside), 40-1/2 x 27 x 31 in., generally good condition, scattered veneer cracks, bubbling and other flaws, surface stains, mortises for arm supports with some later nailing, some distress to molding surround for upholstered seat, casters likely replacements, crack at one front foot, modern upholstery generally good condition, not examined under upholstery. Notes: By family tradition the chair was formerly owned by Willie Person Mangum, United States Senator from North Carolina between 1831-1836 and 1840-1853.. Provenance: underside of seat with early painted inscription "Dr. H. Morton"; Estate of Lockert Bemiss Mason, Wilmington, North Carolina
