Capture of HMS Macedonian by USS United States, circa 1818, signed lower left "A.L. Garneray", oil on panel, 10 x 14 in.; fine modern gilt wood and composition frame with eagle shield corner decoration, cradled and backed, craquelure, scattered light retouch withing craquelure and other small points; frame with abrasions. Notes: This scene depicts the final blow to the HMS Macedonian by the USS United States on October 25 during the War of 1812. After two weeks of repairs, the Macedonian was towed into Newport, Rhode Island with a sensational national reception. It was the second Royal Navy vessel to surrender to the Americans during the war.
