(1928-2004, Cherokee, Qualla Boundary, Swain County, North Carolina), walnut, signed on left foot "A. Crowe", 6-1/4 x 8-1/4 x 3-1/2 in., good condition. Notes: Amanda Crowe began carving at an early age, and in 1953 was hired to teach woodcarving and sculpture at the Cherokee High School. In a single day, she taught as many as 73 students in the tenth through twelfth grades. Best known for her carvings of bears, her style was somewhat abstract and lyrical rather than detailed in presentation. By the time she was 30 years old, she had amassed many prestigious awards usually reserved for more mature artists. A member of the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual and the Southern Highland Craft Guild, she received an honorary doctorate from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1980 and was the recipient of the North Carolina Folk Heritage Award in 2000..
