Note: Excavation of the Dutch Gap Canal in Virginia was begun in 1864. The excavation was performed largely by a unit of African American soldiers, which took continual fire from Confederate troops. The bravery of the soldiers was mentioned by General Grant in his memoirs. Alfred Waud attended every major engagement of the Army of the Potomac, sketching the action and sending his sketches back to Harpers.
