circa 1865-1870, in the Louis XVI revival taste, likely cherry under ebonized surface, bronze mounts signed "Roux" and "AR" for Alexander Roux, New York, surmounted by a wreath and swag mounted crest, foliate finials, molded crest rail, cartouche seatback, upholstered scrolled arms, floral blocked seat rail, turned, tapered and fluted legs, casters, 39-1/2 x 26 x 20 in.

Provenance: Collection of Beverly and Richard Kelly of Garrison, New York

Note: Alexander Roux examples with signed bronze mounts are exceptionally rare. Other New York firms of the mid 19th century, including Pottier & Stymus and bronze foundry P.E. Guerin, typically signed and initialed bronze mounts in a similar manner. The bronze castings found on the chair offered here were likely cast from patterns Roux used for wood carvings on related furniture, as a similar wreath motif is found in carvings on several documented Roux objects. See 19th Century America: Furniture and Other Decorative Arts, Berry, Tracy, et al., the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1970.

Condition

structurally sound, restored ebonized surface, bronze crest is currently detached due to stripped nail holes, some beaded bronze molding is somewhat loose or lifting in areas, one small section of missing beaded molding along seat rail, seat rail with a doweled repair, other general wear and surface imperfections expected with age and use
