This commission served as celebration of the United States' 200th year. The plane and associated brochures are titled "Flying Colors of the United States." Calder inscribed this print to Eugenia Sheppard, who was an influential fashion columnist involved in New York's art community in the 1960's through the 1980's. The signature reveals an already ill Calder who died of a heart attack in 1976, the year this print was made.
