Note: Carlieri, though little known today, was once a leading figure in early 18th-century architectural painting, bridging the grandeur of Andrea Pozzo’s quadratura and the refined proto-Neoclassicism of his pupil, Gian Paolo Panini.
Historian David Marshall describes him as “emerging from oblivion” to dominate his genre, admired for his mastery of perspective, harmonious colors, and animated figures. In 1704, Pellegrini Orlandi praised his “beautiful pictures full of architecture… lively movement and fine colors.”
