Burial of Latane by Wm. D. Washington, New York, 1868, Virginia Civil War Historical steel engraving, engraved by A. G. Campbell, 23-1/2 x 31-3/4 in. (image); large wood frame, very good, with moderate spotting, scattered foxing, evidence of two small tears, toning, not examined out of frame. Notes: This important engraving commemorates the burial of Capt. William Latane, who was killed when the Essex Light Dragoons charged the Union Army near "Old Church" in Hanover County, Va. He was the only fatality in J.E.B. Stuart's "Ride around McLellan" in 1862. Latane was buried in the garden at Westwood, the home of Mrs. Catherine Brockenbrough. She, other women, and a few slaves were the only ones attending as the Federal troops refused to allow clergy to perform the service.. Provenance: Private Georgia Collection
