(French/America, 1804-1889)KoskiuscoÿMonument at West Point, unsigned, oil on canvas, 24 x 28 in.; original period carved gilt wood frame, 28 x 33 in.Note: William purchased this painting in the Spring of 1972 as a Victor De Grailly. Not long after, he began his extensive research on De Grailly in preparation for an article he wrote for The Magazine Antiques.ÿ At some point during his research he made the determination that this was not the hand of the artist, becauseÿÿaccompanying the original sales receipt is a note in William's hand attached to the original Old Print Shop label that reads "Purchased from Old Print Shop.ÿNotÿby De Grailly, attributed to Garnier."ÿ He was referring to Hippolyte-Louis Garnier,ÿa less well-known contemporary of De Grailly. Much confusion still surrounds the work of De Grailly and Garnier and their relationship to William Henry Bartlett and his published engravings, although no furtherÿexplanationÿon this attribution was foundÿamongÿWilliam's research.ÿÿÿ; Provenance: The Old Print Shop, New York, NY, purchased April, 1972, for $1,750 (accompanied by original receipt); The Estate of William N. Banks, Jr., Newnan, Georgia
