(Italian, 1483-1520)

The Deposition, Christ's Descent from the Cross, unsigned, 16th century copy, oil on panel, 18-5/8 x 14-1/4 in.; Italian tabernacle style pastiglia and gilt wood frame, 25-3/4 x 24-1/8 x 4 in.

Provenance: Purchased in Italy in 2016; The Estate of Dr. J. Clayton Davie and Family

Note: This painting is a copy of a composition in a drawing by Raphael that was known through a 16th-century engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi. According to a curator at The British Museum, London, Raimondi's engraving is "related to three drawings by Raphael, circa 1505/7, presumably for an unexecuted painting. The drawing likely also provided a model for Ugo da Carpi's chiaroscuro xylograph of the same subject, see Bartsch XII.43.22.
The design was lifted complete by Bernardino Ricca for his altarpiece of the 'Deposition' of 1521 in San Pietro al Po, Cremona."
