Venere nuda distesa con Mercurio e Cupido sullo sfondo del paesaggio, (Reclining Nude Venus with Hermes and Cupid in a Landscape) (D. 147.3, F. Z. 42868), an early copy possibly 16th century, unsigned, oil on canvas, 42-1/2 x 68 in., (108 x 173 cm.); modern gilt wood frame
Provenance: Galleria Salocchi, Florence, Italy; Private Collection, Vienna, Austria; Dr. Leslie Cook, Curator National Gallery of Art, purchased, Paris, France; Collection of a Virginia Gentleman
Note: Lambert Sustris was a workshop assistant to Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, circa 1488-1576) in Venice . The Fondazione Zeri retains a photograph of this painting that is inscribed verso by Federico Zeri (1921-1998). The translation from Italian reads, "L. Sustris (or copy?)/ ex Salocchi." The Fondazione Zeri confirmed that Zeri believed this painting to have an attribution to Sustris but questioned whether or not it might be a copy. Andrea Donati, who illustrates the painting in his catalog on the works of Paris Bordone, seems to recommend the work as a copy. It is worth the note that the work appears to be of the period or near period but with experts agreeing it is likely a copy.
