(British, 1745–1806)

George Prince of Wales, wearing the uniform of the Royal Kentish Bowmen, after the portrait held by the Royal Collection Trust dated 1791, a 19th century copy, unsigned, oil on canvas, 19-5/8 x 13-1/2 in.; gilt wood and composition frame, 27 x 20-1/2 in.

Note:

To the great benefit of English archery the prince regent, and later king, George IV (1762–1830) was a dedicated archer himself and became the royal patron of several archery societies such as the Royal Kentish Bowmen or the Royal Toxophilite Society, which was founded in 1781 and is still in existence today. The standardization of targets and shooting distances throughout the UK can be attributed to this royal archer. -Jan Sachers for Bow International (See: http://www.bow-international.com/features/traditional/the-first-york/)
