Note: A portrait by Stuart of this same sitter is included in this auction and listed in Park, Lawrence, John Hill Morgan, and Royal Cortissoz. 1926. Gilbert Stuart : An Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works. New York: William Edwin Rudge, number 693, p. 636, vol. II. This is likely a copy of that portrait. Stuart often copied, or replicated, his own work, but these were often recorded by Stuart. According to Lawrence Park, Reed was a merchant from Marblehead, Massachusetts, and served as a representative from his state in the twelfth and thirteenth congresses, from March 1811-March 1815.
