British, 19th century, based on the design by Robert Adam for a commode made for the Countess of Derby in 1774, with hand painted ornament in the Grecian style overall, finely painted top with carved and gilt wood molding over a painted frieze set with carved urn medallions, the case with three painted doors, finely carved, gessoed and gilt wood moldings, medallions, rams heads and bellflower streamers, 39-1/2 x 61 x 25-3/4 in.

Notes: This lot is accompanied by extensive correspondence between an early owner of the commode and various institutions, dealers and other experts regarding the possible attribution to Robert Adam.

Condition

scattered cracks to veneers, especially to central door, some additional edge chips and repairs, the top with minor crack and separation, areas of wear and gilding losses, underside of top with later brace, two doors lacking inlaid escutcheons, other typical wear and surface flaws
