Beatrice Cenci Being Sketched by Guido Reni, signed lower left "Achille Leonardi" with wax seal, oil on canvas, 54 x 68-1/2 in.; fine original 19th century gilt wood and composition cove molding frame, puncture with some paint loss above sketchbook at right, light grime, other small points of retouch; frame with minor restorations and losses to composition, warm and gently aged gilt surface, abrasions. Notes: This painting depicts the artist, Guido Reni executing the preparatory drawing for his famous portrait of the doomed young woman, Beatrice Cenci. After failing to be protected by the authorities, she was convicted of killing her abusive father with a hammer and put to death.. Provenance: Private Collection
