Provenance: From the Collection of Daniel Bibb, Atlanta, Georgia
Note: A monarch of the House of Bourbon, Louis was born at the Château de Fontainebleau to Henry IV of France and Marie de Medici. He ascended to the throne at the young age of eight after his father was assassinated. His mother was regent until he came of age in 1610. She maintained great power until she was banished in 1617 and her followers were forcibly removed from court. His reign was aided by Cardinal Richelieu for eighteen years, establishing Louis XIII as the first absolute monarch of France.
