Austrian, mid-19th century, partial dinner service completed for Gustav Ritter von Epstein (1828-1879), arch gilt hand painted edges, scrolling foliate bands, accents of red and blue edging, each piece accented with an armorial crest of a crown, shield and garter, bearing the motto "Sis Qui Videris", many pieces impressed with "Bidenschild [Royal Vienna Shield Mark], 804/3.4", set includes: 11 dinner plates, 10 in.; 17 dessert plates, 9 in.; 11 soup bowls, 10 in.; two sauce boats, 7-1/2 x 11 in.; three covered vegetable dishes, 5 x 10 in.; one large soup tureen with lid, 11 x 14-1/2 in.; three oval platters, 15 in. to 18-1/2 in.; two small compotes with lids, 6 x 8 in. and 6-3/4 x 6-1/2 in. 

Notes:  Gustave Ritter von Epstein (1828-1879) was a wealthy Viennese industrialist and banker.  Born in Prague, he moved to Vienna to run his father's banking concerns as a young man.  Eventually selling his family business, he then formed the Bank Epstein, acquiring and building large tracts of Vienna.  He later became the Director of the Austrian National Bank.  Conferred with the Order of the Iron Crown in 1866 by Emperor Franz Josef I. 

"Sis Qui Videris" translates to "Be all that you can be."

Condition

minimal surface scratching, repairs to base of large soup tureen, possible restoration to two tureen lid edges, minor decoration loss, in good shape overall
