Judd-60, C. GOBRECHT F. on base, plain edge, no stars on obverse, stars on reverse, medal alignment, weight 26.7 grams/412.1 grains, from the circulation issue struck within the first two years of design; Note: There has been recently published work as it pertains to deceptive struck counterfeit Gobrecht Dollars, the most well-researched being Jack Young's article in CoinWeek (www.coinweek.com) dated July 14, 2017. In the article, he shows examples of non-genuine Gobrechts that all trace their origin back to one specific source coin. These began to surface around 2010 in the numismatic marketplace. This current example we are offering today does not match any of the diagnostic marks shared by the spurious ones. Perhaps more importantly, it also has stronger details (less wear) than the source coin. Also, we believe the collection that the present example comes from lends credence to its authenticity. While this coin, like all others, is being sold without financial guarantee, we have strong reason to believe it is genuine.; Provenance: Estate of Girard Chambers, Jr., Hampton, Virginia
Condition
photogenic at arms-length with a sharpness of Fine+ or lower end VF, however under magnification coin has a myriad of scratches, both on the obverse and reverse fields, possibly to "clean up" a coin that had dark toning or staining; needs to be inspected first hand by potential bidders
