original letter dated September 8, 1825 from General Lafayette to "His Excellency Governor Manning, Colombia (sic) S. Carolina", thanking him for "a map of South Carolina will retrace to me steps through the state and every one of which has been marked by testimonies of esteem and affection more dear to my remembrance", the letter is signed "Your Obliged Affectionate Friend, Lafayette", Columbia address also revealed verso in window, accompanied by transcription of letter, 9-1/2 x 7-1/2 in. (sight), later mat and gilt composite frame, 15-1/2 x 13-1/2 in.˜Note: The 1825 letter to Richard Irvine Manning, Governor of South Carolina from 1824 to 1826, refers to the map presented to Lafayette on the southern leg of his triumphal tour in 1824-1825. The silver case that accompanied the map was made by South Carolina silversmith Louis Boudo and is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The case is engraved: "Presented by Richard I. Manning/Governor of South Carolina/In the name of the State/to/General Lafayette/whilst at Columbia in March 1825/In tracing your route through out territory every inhabited spot will recall to your memory the devotion/and affection of a grateful people/Ls.Boudo, Fecit/Charleston, So.
