circa 1767, tombstone shaped fireback with figure wearing a plumed hat and a cloak buckled on his right shoulder, flanked by two pedestals with flowering urns and and a scrolled border, inscribed at top "Inscribed AT NEW YORK, 1767" under an arched top surmounted with dolphins, 32 x 21-1/2 in.Illustrated in: Mercer, Henry Chapman.ÿThe Bible in Iron or the Pictured Stoves and Stove Plates of the Pennsylvania Germans with Notes and Colonial Fire-Backs in the United States. Doylestown: Bucks County Hist. Soc, 1914, page 123, no 217. Mercer indicates that the figure may represent a Highlander in the British army in the 19th century. The plate was probably made at one of the New York furnaces in the Flemish style that was popular both in England and the colonies. - Provenance: Property from the Collection of Dudley and Constance Godfrey
